No problems at all for 8 months, just one oil change. Lots of power, very good handling and excellent off road delivery.

Touareg is really fun to drive. I do not drive very much nor do I require extreme performance and Touareg seems to fit my profile extremely well. I want a reliable drive in snow and Touareg is awesome in that respect. I have read about lots of issues on lower VIN Touaregs, but the only problem (which was easily fixed) was fast running clock. So if you are in the market for these I would recommend higher than 65k VIN as I have very positive experience.
Favorite Features
Interior in general, quiet ride, handling in winter conditions, downward tilting side mirror when gear in reverse, 150$ 20gb mp3 player instead of cd changer

Don't let the great ride and fancy features fool you, if you get a 2004 it is a lemon. The Thing was in the shop more then I drove it. Lots of interior issues with falling apart, apparently there are 27 recalls and when I went to trade it in I lost about 12,000 in 6 months. No dealer would even take it, I had to bring it to carmax.

Everyone said don't buy one..."They're unreliable... Read consumer ratings"...etc. I was overwhelmed with the specifications, styling and detail, appearance and ride. I have owned 3 Jeep Grand Cherokees, a Land Rover Discovery, and few Mazdas. Other choices were BMW X3, Acura MDX, Volvo XC. This car has well exceeded any of them in engineering and detail. I haven't owned it long, so I can't vouch for the long-term reliability factor, but I have never liked a car this much. The car is loaded with standard features -- I only opted for the power seat upgrade. There are so many electronic features and controls that I am having to do my homework and read the manual / watch the video.
Favorite Features
Styling, interior layout, wide cabin, handling, good power for V6 w/ +5000 lbs.

CD player has a bit of a delay when selecting tracks. I can't find the controls for the rear wiper, need to research it.

Pros: When it works right, AmaZING. Cons: VW is arrogant and insists that too many problems are within normal vehicle operating parameters. Driving experience: Drives nicely when aligned properly, which is rarely. Ooops, just hit a curb, need to bring it in again, now the truck is going to act squirrely again. This may have all the bells and whistles to go off road but there is a price to pay. If you off road on anything substantial, I can almost guarantee that you will damage one of the tires with a gash of some sort. And because this is an AWD vehicle, you will now need to replace ALL the tires in order to retain the proper handling dynamics and don't forget to re-align it. So On

The Touareg on paper looks like the ultimate SUV: excellent perfomance on pavement and unbelievable off road ablility. The problem: it will be in the shop so often you will not be able to experience this theoretical performance very often. Over the first year of owning this car I have had multiple problems: stepper motor malfunction, poor remote range, door handle fell off, bizarre deafening fan noise that I was told is "normal", persistent wind noise from side mirrors, and others. And going to a VW dealer for repairs is no joy. They have no clue about customer service. The attitude of the service dept. is accusatory at best- like i caused all of the quality control problems. STAY AWAY TOUAREG.

A pleasure to drive off and on road when it works. This is painful because you cannot really enjoy the ride because you know it will not last. It is like a summer fling on a beach far from home- you both know it is not meant to last.

Let toyota or honda take over vw manufacturing. Learn how to make a nav system (try looking at Honda/Acura) that is usable. The nav system reminds me having to go back to msdos after using mac os x. Sell your vw stock. no company with such disregard for the customer will survive.

Exceptional safety feeling, did not have a single problem during 8 days family trip to west coast last winter. Perfect cruiser. I like the folding mirrors in narrow parking spots. Great great car.

Folding mirrors, navigation system even based on CD. Great off road fun, acceleration with S mode is terrific.

Keep going, small details need some work eg the surface of push buttons to open under arm compartment is already started to peel off

The Touareg combines the road handling characteristics of a well-engineered German car with the attributes of a mid- size SUV. Like its smaller German counterparts, the Touareg handles brilliantly, despite its size and weight. The six cylinder provides sufficient power when needed, particularly when entering busy NJ highways from a standing start.
Favorite Features
The control features are easily accessible and intuitively designed. Highly recommend the park assist system.
Suggested Improvements
Gas mileage is disappointing, so don't be shocked by the sticker when you fill it up. Rear tailgate a bit of a chore to open (need to unlock all doors to operate).
