I also have a 2003, Beetle convertible, perfect condition, garage kept since new, 19k miles, my window is coming loose from the material for no apparent reason. Look for a bad ground to the assembly. Usually when you have a dim bulb like you are describing it is getting it's ground through another bulb. Read More...

hey jerry, I noticed it has been a while since you have posted your dilemma. In case you have not figured it out, I have a 2001 beetle, and might be able to help you. There are two circular pieces of plastic on the inside of your trunk, opposite the taillights on the outside...they should be black and sloped. These pieces pop off, giving you access to the lamp. Power Steering Leaks - Covered Under Power Train Warranty?

I have a March 2003 VW New Beetle GLS with 31000 miles. The Power Steering was not working, so I put in more Power Steering fluid and it leaks out of bottom of car. Repair shop the seals on both sides of the steering gear (Rack and Pinion Steering>) have failed and it will be a $1400 repair. Supposedly fornow the power steering pump still seems ok. I followed the instructions to replace the driver's side headlamp, found it really difficult to pull hard enough on the black plastic lever to release the headlight assembly, was careful to set the assembly on the two tracks before pushing it back in, and can not get the assembly to latch back into place. my family has been buying VWs for over 25 years now, and we've ever model basically except the new beetles-anywhere between 1998-2007- They are the worst cars VW makes. Beetles and the 2000-2004 jettas are crazy massed produce so alot of stuff just over looked. i would suggest the Passats or golfs. I drive a 01Cabrio and love it. but the dont make those anymore. ...
