EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

The ML offers Mercedes-Benz quality across a large range of powertrain options. The AMG version is quite impressive, if not overkill.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Large range of powertrain options (from the 3.0-liter diesel ML320 CDI that generates 398 lb-ft of torque, to the ML63 with a 507-hp gasoline V8) make the ML a versatile choice for buyers of this luxury SUV.

Comfort

RATING

Lower end models offer significant levels of ride comfort mixed with many luxury amenities. ML63 offers a ton of performance features with completely compromising comfort.

Function

RATING

Interior treatment is upscale but limits functionality -- particularly where heating and ventilation controls are concerned. Button-heavy design frustrates quick temperature changes. Audio controls must be learned and secondary controls could be easier to use.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

Sharp proportions on base models get a serious boost at with the AMG-level flares and wide rubber. Quality is excellent inside and out.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Luxurious As much about luxury as it is about performance, this is one fancy-pants SUV.

Family Friendly Comfortable with four people plus cargo space.

Image Enhancer Let's face it, if you're buying an ML63 it's because you want to be noticed.

High Performer With more than 500 horsepower, the ML63 is a ridiculous but fun way to haul the family.
