The undeniably smooth 2.5-liter engine is a little down on power compared to the more powerful (and more costly) 3.5-liter IS 350. The manual transmission is not executed to the standard of a true sport sedan so opt for the automatic. While the electric-assist steering may lack "feel," it does provide precise and confident cornering. This sedan is slightly above average in terms of dynamics, but a true enthusiast will want more.
The IS 250's ride is smooth and isolated on most roads, but rough ones will produce ride harshness and tire noise. The optional X package will only exacerbate this trait. Though its interior dimensions are comparable to other cars in its class, the IS 250 can feel a little tight for larger drivers -- due to front seats that feel too high off the floor, and little elbow room. Still, ingress/egress is easy enough for most, and the seats are widely adjustable. We wish there were also an adjustable thigh support, however. Don't forget, this is a small car, especially from the backseat. Optionally available powered rear sunshade is a nice touch.
Optional adaptive (articulating) xenon headlamps are now a stand-alone option, or as part of the Luxury package. A back-up camera is part of the optional navigation system, and parking-assist bumper sensors are optional, as well. Visibility is otherwise good with adequate sight lines front and rear. The standard audio system layout is scattered and not intuitive. Opting for the Premium audio plus navigation consolidates display and user inputs. Interior and truck space are what you might expect from a "compact" car -- tight but adequate.
While it was a somewhat sleek and trend-setting design when it debuted, the IS has quickly become a design cliche. Still attractive, but not one for the ages. Inside, the car possesses a luxuriousness other cars in this class do not. Materials and execution are top notch. Outside, the Lexus touch extends to paint and build quality which are also far above average.
Luxurious
Even the base-model IS 250 can make you feel pampered. With a full roster of truly luxurious enhancements, you can easily add $10K to the price.
Image Enhancer
From its inception, the mission of Toyota's Lexus division was to enhance the company's image. While the IS 250 represents a beginning step on the staircase into the brand, that doesn't make it any less a Lexus.
Daily Commuter
With the smaller engine (and conceivable 26 mpg highway rating), the IS 250 could justify driving a Lexus as a very comfortable and reasonably economical everyday commuter.
